Weekend Trips • June 2026

Sometimes you just need to get out. Not a week-long vacation with flights and itineraries — just a weekend. Two days away from the city, somewhere the kids can run around and you can sit in a camp chair and not think about anything for a while.

Sandy swimming beach at a private lake campground, a weekend getaway from Indianapolis

If you're in Indianapolis, you're about 75 minutes from exactly that.

Why Terre Haute?

Terre Haute isn't the first place that comes to mind for a weekend getaway, and that's kind of the point. It's close enough that the drive doesn't eat into your weekend, but far enough west that it genuinely feels like you've left the city behind. The Wabash Valley is quiet, green, and uncrowded — exactly what you're looking for when you need a reset.

Water Park on a Lake

Most weekend-getaway water parks involve indoor pools, wave machines, and a lot of chlorine. This is different. Lazy L Lake's Aqua Park is a floating inflatable obstacle course on a 75-acre private lake. Trampolines, climbing walls, slides, balance beams — all floating on clean lake water with a sandy beach to come back to.

It's the kind of thing where kids beg to go back the next day and adults secretly want to do it again too.

What a Weekend Looks Like

Here's a typical two-day weekend at Lazy L Lake:

Friday Evening

  • Arrive and set up camp (or check into a rental — no gear needed)
  • Walk down to the lake for sunset
  • Campfire and s'mores

Saturday

  • Morning: Kayak or paddleboard on the lake
  • Afternoon: Aqua Park and beach swimming
  • Evening: Live band at the campground (most weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day)
  • Night: Campfire, stars, no alarm set for tomorrow

Sunday

  • Morning: Fishing off the dock, coffee by the lake
  • Late morning: One more swim
  • Afternoon: Pack up and head home — you'll be back in Indy by 3 PM
